Staying safe online isn’t always about spotting scams in the moment, sometimes you can protect yourself before trouble shows up. Here are a few quick browser settings you can check once and then forget about:

In Google Chrome (on Mac or PC):

  • Turn on Safe Browsing – Chrome will warn you if you’re about to visit a dangerous site or download something suspicious. Go to Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Security > Safe Browsing > Enhanced Protection

  • Block pop-ups – 🚫 Most scam pop-ups try to trick you into clicking. Go to Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects and make sure it’s set to “Blocked.”

In Safari (on Mac):

  • Prevent cross-site tracking – This limits advertisers from following you around the web. In Safari > Settings > Privacy, check the box for “Prevent cross-site tracking.”

  • Block pop-ups – 🚫 Go to Safari > Settings > Websites > Pop-up Windows and set it to “Block and Notify.”

In Microsoft Edge (on PC):

  • Use Microsoft Defender SmartScreen – This helps block known malicious websites, downloads, and extensions. Find it under Settings > Privacy, search, and services.

  • Block pop-ups – 🚫 Go to Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Pop-ups and redirects and set it to “Blocked.”

These little settings don’t take the place of being careful, but they add an extra layer of protection so you’re not relying on quick reflexes alone.
